Life expectancy for every country

All figures are years at birth from the same WHO release. HALE is healthy life expectancy for both sexes; the healthspan gap is life expectancy minus HALE, not a personal forecast of illness. Female − male compares the two sex-specific estimates.

Rank always refers to both-sex life expectancy, using original unrounded values. Exact ties share a rank; equal displayed decimals may hide a difference. Missing values are shown as — and sort last. WHO regions are not continents.

Historical years in the revised series use one method version. The archived release is a separate historical reference, not a point to splice into the new time series.

Archived analysis: WHO 2021 release

The interactive table above defaults to WHO 2023. The analysis and figures below preserve the original 2021 release for historical reference; they are not the 2023 ranking or the revised series' 2021 observations.

Life expectancy at birth, both sexes, WHO Global Health Estimates, data year 2021.

In the archived WHO Global Health Estimates for 2021, Japan has the highest life expectancy at birth of the 185 countries and areas in that release, at 84.5 years for both sexes combined. Lesotho has the lowest, at 51.5. The archived analysis below uses life expectancy at birth unless it says otherwise.

WHO Global Health Estimates, 2021. HALE is healthy life expectancy at birth, both sexes. Ranked on unrounded values; countries shown with the same one-decimal value are ordered by the next decimal.

The top of the ranking is tightly packed: only 1.9 years separate first place from tenth. WHO's figures are model-based estimates, so differences that small are better read as a group of near-equals than as a strict podium. The ten come from 2 WHO regions, spanning East and South-East Asia, Australia and Europe.

WHO Global Health Estimates, 2021. Lowest value last. HALE is healthy life expectancy at birth, both sexes.

8 of the ten lowest are in WHO's African Region. The bottom of the ranking is far more spread out than the top: 7.6 years separate the 10th-lowest from the lowest. In countries with low life expectancy at birth, a large part of the gap comes from deaths in infancy and early childhood, which pull an at-birth average down far more than deaths at older ages do. Why longevity differs between countries.

Life expectancy is not healthy life expectancy

Life expectancy at birth

The average number of years a newborn would live if the death rates of 2021 applied throughout their life.

Healthy life expectancy (HALE)

The same years, discounted for time WHO estimates would be lived in less than full health.

Both appear in the tables above. The solid part of each bar in the chart is HALE.

The two rankings largely agree at the ends, but not exactly. On HALE at birth, the highest value is Singapore's, at 73.6 years. Across all 185 countries with both figures, healthy life expectancy is between 84% and 89% of total life expectancy. Compare both measures for any country.

What a ranking cannot tell you

  • It is a period measure. It describes the death rates of one year, not the lifetime of anyone born in that year.
  • It is an average for a whole national population. Differences inside a country — by region, income or sex — can be as large as the differences between countries.
  • WHO's figures for countries with incomplete death registration rely more heavily on modelling, so the uncertainty around them is wider than the single decimals suggest.
  • It says nothing about an individual. A person's own prospects depend on their age, health and circumstances, none of which are in the table.
  • At older ages, country differences shrink considerably. A ranking at birth is a poor guide to the remaining years of people who are already old.

To see the same tables for a specific age, sex and country, including the chance of reaching later ages, use the life expectancy calculator.
